Internal Communications & Engagement Manager

Based in St Albans/Hybrid WFH



Reporting into the Director of Communications, this role has responsibility for the development and implementation of all internal communications to over 4000 colleagues, while driving two-way engagement among our people working across our 16 sites. You’ll also play an important role in the delivery of our ESG targets relating to local communities, including a new volunteering scheme.


What you'll be doing?

  • Working with the wider Communications team to develop the internal communications strategy and implement this across appropriate communication channels
  • Delivery of engaging internal communications, ranging from all-colleague emails and presentations, to digital and written comms packs to support the comms and HR teams at our sites
  • Ownership of our intranet, including writing and publishing regular content and working with IT to ensure the successful rollout to our manufacturing sites, while driving two-way engagement and increased take up among non-connected colleagues
  • Manage a networking of site communication champions, driving engagement and regular upload of content to our intranet and encouraging sharing of best practice
  • Manage the weekly all-company newsletter, including collating and planning stories, drafting content and project managing the process
  • Working closely with the HR team to deliver communications and drive engagement of key initiatives e.g., D&I, company purpose, all colleague survey
  • Lead on the delivery of internal events, in particular, playing a key role in the planning and execution of our management conference and colleague awards, including content development, advising on engaging formats, plus overall event management and delivery
  • Work closely with our corporate charity partners to devise and execute innovative campaigns and support the delivery of our ESG targets relating to local communities
  • Manage a network of charity champions across our sites to help drive engagement behind our fundraising efforts and manage a new volunteering scheme
  • Leading on the tracking and quarterly reporting of our two ESG communities’ targets
  • Support the External Communications Manager to deliver our Corporate PR strategy, including the delivery of our corporate PR campaigns, publishing content to our corporate website and managing our corporate social media presence
  • Support to the wider Corporate Affairs team across Public Affairs and ESG as required
  • Deliver regular reporting on internal communication activity to the Executive and PLC board
  • Manage relevant budgets
  • Support the External Communications Manager and Director of Communications with issues and crisis management as required
  • Manage external agencies on an ad hoc project basis
  • Work with the wider communications team, to ensure a coordinated approach to communications and content sharing


What we need from you?


  • A proven track record of managing an internal communications programme across multiple sites, including channel management, communications planning, change and leadership comms
  • Experience communicating with multiple internal audiences, including office-based and front-line colleagues and driving engagement among both groups
  • Experience managing charity partnerships and/or involvement in CSR/ESG initiatives relating to local communities e.g., colleague fundraising and volunteering
  • A background in external communications or a desire to expand your experience in this area
  • Outstanding written communication
  • Ability to think strategically and be proactive with new ideas, while ensuring seamless execution
  • Experience managing multiple communications channels, in particular digital communication channels
  • Strong project management and organisational skills
  • Ability to prioritise, strategically plan and practically execute with speed and effectiveness
