Packaging Development Manager

Based in Worksop/Hybrid WFH with travel to other sites



To manage the packaging development process, delivering ESG targets for packaging.  Key target -100% recyclability by 2025.


What you'll be doing:

  • Manage the development process for packaging changes required to deliver on business ESG targets
  • Understand and communicate the impact of packaging on the environment.  Implement and develop strategies to reduce its impact e.g., reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, fossil fuel and water consumption and GHG emissions.
  • Keep up to date with new packaging materials and formats, and legislation/regulations related to packaging through webinars, external forums, industry contacts, etc
  • Develop packaging that meets current and foreseeable regulatory requirements and business targets eg ESG targets, Plastics Tax, EPR.
  • Scope out alternative recyclable materials to replace existing non-recyclables.
  • Create & develop recyclable packaging that meets agreed standards for finished product, filling machinery performance, branding. Sell in ideas to marketing, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, lead the packaging development of an idea from concept through to implementation.
  • Manage the implementation of new packaging materials and processes within co-packers, which are specifically linked to ESG activities.
  • Within the project team manage the packaging development process including costings, concept samples, trials (including objectives, outputs / success criteria etc.), operations briefing, due diligence validation, process compliance, distribution and retailer handling trials within Premier Cake sites and within co-packers. Support the business Plastics Strategy requirements.
  • Coach and support junior members of the packaging development team, in areas of expertise or experience.
  • Where applicable, manage the day-to-day needs and activities of direct report(s) e.g. admin, project activity, prioritisation, goal setting etc.  Support the personal development of direct report(s), through joint identification of appropriate training courses, and build and review development plans on a regular basis and co-ordinate training budget requirements.
  • Ensure potential suppliers have the technical capability to deliver requirements for Premier Foods.
  • Use effective project management skills and ensure clear communication both written and verbal.
  • Investigate & communicate new technology developments that could support innovation.
  • Support packaging project work and develop the required specifications resulting in capital investment for EPD
  • Manage and develop a positive approach to Packaging & Machine suppliers to attain new ideas.
  • Build understanding of packaging materials interactions with diversity of packaging machines and ensure that the packaging materials key performance criteria are part of the specifications.
  • Support packaging project work resulting in value improvement (ie format, material and supplier changes)
  • Maintain and update Packaging databases e.g. Hamilton Grant Packaging Specifications


What we need from you:

  • At least five years in a direct packaging development role, preferably in a Food, Beverage or Pharmaceutical environment
  • Packaging R&D project delivery from concept through to launch
  • STEM based degree, particularly Packaging, Materials Product Design would be an advantage
  • Institute of Packaging Diploma would be an advantage
  • Project Management skills
  • Technically competent across a range of packaging material specifications, their applications and packing processes.
  • Demonstrable experience with developing new pack formats with external packaging suppliers and third-party manufacturers
  • Demonstrable experience with the development and introduction of new to the business materials and pack formats.
  • Capable of managing capital invested sized projects independently
