Operations Manager

Based - Ashford

Full time, permanent

Competitive salary, plus car allowance and bonus


Reporting directly into the Factory General Manager, this key position forms part of the Senior Leadership Team and is accountable for Factory production, leading a team of 250 staff. This role will be responsible for the development of operational strategy and delivery, feeding into the overall site strategy, ensuring the business meets Company and Statutory standards regarding Health & Safety, food safety and quality standards, whilst ensuring that operational targets are met in accordance with best practice and through driving continuous improvement culture and effective / efficient deployment of staff. 


What you will be doing:

  • Identify and implement operations strategy, incorporating best practice from within Premier Foods and the UK industry
  • Identify and set strategic performance targets and improvement plans for Efficiency, Waste, Labour, Standards and GMP
  • Lead a team of Managers and hold teams accountable to deliver the site operations KPI’s
  • Provide opportunities for the development of the manufacturing teams by developing and coaching direct reports using the Performance Development Review process and regular 1-1’s
  • Establish and drive a continuous improvement culture across all areas of manufacturing
  • Ensure that all manufacturing operations remain safe to colleagues, contractors and the environment
  • Control Indirect and Direct cost budgets, achieving customer service targets within them
  • Maintain open and constructive channel with site Union Representatives


Key Opportunities

We are on a cultural journey within Operations to empower and build trust in our cross-functional area teams to take greater ownership of the improvement agenda in their areas. The Operations Manager will have a key role in working with the Engineering and Quality teams to take this to the next level and to link it to true performance gains. We have a major opportunity to establish and embed a true C.I. culture across all production areas, and to drive a Right First Time/Root Cause culture to fix issues permanently. Our other major opportunity is to better standardise and drive our operator training programme to improve the skill, capability and flexibility of our production teams.


What we need from you:

  • Graduate with at least 5 years’ leadership experience within a technical/engineering/manufacturing discipline
  • Minimum 3 years experience of leading C.I. implementation, with hands on experience of using CI tooklit in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience of TPM/ Improvement methodologies and a track record of successful implementation
  • Experience of successfully implementing operator training programmes
  • Financially aware and comfortable with statistical analysis and budget control
  • Excellent overview of supply chain issues, including incoming and outgoing logistics
  • Project management skills
