Tax Manager

Full time, permanent

Based in Manchester

 

Role purpose:

  • As the Tax Manager, you will lead the Manchester based tax team responsible for delivery of tax compliance and the statutory reporting cycle. Compliance cycle relates to Corporate tax, VAT & Excise returns for the UK group and overseas subsidiaries.
  • Undertaking risk based reviews to drive process improvements and to support the annual submission of the Senior Accounting Officer certificate. 
  • Contribute to business projects, ensuring the tax implications are identified and addressed. 
  • Preparation of computations to support tax disclosures in Group and subsidiary statutory accounts. 
  • Your team will consist of 3 people, yourself with 2 direct reports. You will be leading this team, with high focus on robust tax control and reporting
  • This role reports to the Head of Tax who is based in St Albans and works closely with the Record to Reporting team in Manchester.  There would be some travel required to St Albans for a day or two every 6-8 weeks

 

What you'll be doing:

Corporate tax

  • Preparation of UK corporate tax returns and management of submission of overseas tax returns 
  • Improve processes to improve efficiency of corporate tax compliance
  • Undertake tax planning to ensure tax assets are optimised
  • Support the annual sign off of the Senior Accounting Officer certificate
  • Undertake country by country reporting
  • Transfer pricing calculations including TP documentation
  • Assisting with overseas tax filings
  • Preparation of instalment tax payments

 

Tax reporting

  • Tax reporting and accounting for the UK Group, undertaking annual review of deferred tax assets
  • Tax reporting and accounting for the individual subsidiaries

 

Indirect tax returns (VAT, Customs Duties and Excise tax returns)

  • Review of monthly VAT and Excise tax returns for the UK and Ireland
  • Undertake risk based reviews of customs duties paid in Ireland
  • Review quarterly GST returns for Australia
  • Improve compliance process and undertake risk based reviews of compliance and accounting processes to ensure returns are correct

 

Plastic Tax returns

  • Review the quarterly returns
  • Undertake risk based reviews of processes to ensure returns are correct

 

PAYE

  • Review PAYE Settlement Agreement calculations prior to submission
  • Review data for Taxed Award Scheme and prepare HMRC submission
  • Support Company Secretarial to complete and submit share scheme returns

 

Advisory

Support Head of Tax in provision of advice to the business including but not limited to:

    • Recoverability of VAT on business costs, VAT liability of new products, VAT liability of promotional activity
    • PAYE queries relating to benefits in kind
    • Corporate tax issues relating to business activities
    • Changes to legislation
  •  

Lead and manage a team

  • Ensure the workload of the team is manged efficiently
  • Conduct 121’s, provide feedback on performance and set annual objectives
  • Develop the team

 

What we need from you:

  • Exceptionally strong proven financial capability with strong tax knowledge
  • Experience gained from working for a top/mid tier accounting firm and/or a tax function in industry
  • Proactive, forward thinking mindset with a pragmatic approach to problem solving
  • An eye for detail with the ability not to get lost in the detail
  • Determination to see things through, getting things finished and completed 
  • Ability to meet deadlines and keep calm under pressure
  • Qualified CTA with 1-2 years PQE
