Marketing Controller - Bisto

Based in St Albans with some flexibility to work from home



Opportunity for a passionate, talented and ambitious Marketing professional to lead a key segment of the Flavouring & Seasoning (F&S) Marketing team at Premier Foods. You will be working for Britain’s 2nd largest food company, owning & driving the largest portfolio within our Grocery business (Bisto, Saxa & the newly launched Cape Herb & Spice brands – circa £165m RSV). Bisto, is a crown jewel - our ambition is to deliver continued outperformance and the role involves developing and delivering transformational plans to build Bisto - the Nations favourite gravy brand, into a modern British savoury meal making brand and not just within gravy!

We are looking for a highly experienced marketeer with a strong track record of transforming brands and leading strategic change to inspire a passionate, energised team into delivering our ambitious growth plans.  The candidate must have strong consumer orientation, balanced with excellent commercial awareness and a “can-do” attitude.  A passion for food is desired but not essential.

In a nutshell:

  • This is a high-profile and important role for the business; you will have responsibility for leading and delivering Innovation (NPD & EPD), working with cross functional internal & external teams to identify opportunities, manage brand performance, present plans & gain internal alignment with key stakeholders
  • Exciting opportunity to work alongside our advertising, media & design agencies to lead the development of Iconic communications for Bisto, capable of driving brand engagement, purchase intent and penetration.
  • Lead the development and delivery of winning brand growth plans which will deliver our vision and strategy against our identified category drivers.
  • Own and lead growth & innovation plans for our Herbs and Spices portfolio (Saxa & Cape, Herb & Spice). The Cape Herb & Spice brand has recently been successfully launched in the UK –  and we see a clear opportunity for fast expansion in Herbs and Spices via continued innovation, in addition to development and execution of holistic support plans.

A rare opportunity in FMCG to have full mix (mental and physical availability levers) alongside full P&L responsibility.


What you'll be doing:

  • Drive brand vision and plans and refine them to ensure that we deliver growth ( 3year planning, winning plans for next fiscal both for Bisto – in and out of gravy- and for Herbs and Spices (Saxa/Cape)
  • Deliver each FY aligned plan, assessing & course correcting in-year against key growth drivers (Innovation, Core, Profitability etc)
  • Work with the Brand Director to evolve and recommend ATL support plans & annual evolution. & control CM Spend.
  • Ensure Innovation plans & delivery aligned against business strategy of  10% of Brand T/O from NPD/EPD, ensure Innovation resource focussed in right L-T areas & brand team develops & delivers closer in EPD programme.
  • To lead, motivate, inspire and the brand team (BM + linked Innovation resource) plus a wider network including, Insights, CP&E & sales, supply chain, R&D, finance and key agencies.  Plus coaching & development of the BM direct report.


What we need from you:

  • Minimum 7-10  years successful marketing leadership experience within a market leading FMCG organisation – Food preference
  • Someone who has the experience of making an impact and consistently delivering outstanding results in a fast moving environment
  • Good understanding and experience of working with the UK Grocery trade
  • Strong experience of working cross-functionally and leading an organisation to work to one growth agenda
  • Evidence of developing strong brand strategies as well as delivering plans to execute them
  • Evidence of strong consumer understanding with a track record of identifying insights and developing plans to unlock them
  • A commercially and analytically aware individual who is comfortable developing and presenting business cases in an organisation which requires fast distillation of data into recommendations & where marketeers have full P&L responsibility
  • An individual who has a track record of getting the best out people with an inspiring, collaborative and inclusive style
  • Evidence of strong communications development with appropriate balance of new vs tried and tested
