Senior Packaging Development Technologist

Based in Worksop with some flexibility to work from home



To manage the packaging development process, delivering ESG targets for packaging.  Key target -100% recyclability by 2025.


What you'll be doing:

  • Understand and communicate the impact of packaging on the environment.  Implement and develop strategies to reduce its impact e.g., reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, fossil fuel and water consumption and GHG emissions.
  • Keep up to date with new packaging materials and formats, and legislation/regulations related to packaging through webinars, external forums, industry contacts, etc
  • Develop packaging that meets current and foreseeable regulatory requirements and business targets eg ESG targets, Plastics Tax, EPR.
  • Scope out alternative recyclable materials to replace existing non-recyclables.
  • Create & develop recyclable packaging that meets agreed standards for finished product, filling machinery performance, branding. Sell in ideas to marketing, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, lead the packaging development of an idea from concept through to implementation.
  • Manage the implementation of new packaging materials and processes within co-packers, which are specifically linked to ESG activities.
  • Build understanding of packaging materials interactions with a diverse of packaging machines and ensure that the packaging materials key performance criteria are part of the specifications. Harness this data to assess opportunities for further improvements of machine efficiencies.
  • Risk assessment of packaging new to Premier Foods or new interaction with product, production line, etc.
  • Liaise with other business functions and maintain understanding of developments and activities across Business Teams, that may have synergistic opportunities.
  • Coach and support junior members of the packaging development team, in areas of expertise or experience.
  • Where applicable, manage the day-to-day needs and activities of direct report(s) e.g. admin, project activity, prioritisation, goal setting etc.  Support the personal development of direct report(s), through joint identification of appropriate training courses, and build and review development plans on a regular basis and co-ordinate training budget requirements.
  • Ensure potential suppliers have the technical capability to deliver requirements for Premier Foods.
  • Develop & manage packaging trial and implementation, specifically: trial protocols (including objectives, outputs, success criteria etc.); supplier support; operations briefings; specification changes; supplier changes e.g.  Audits; print runs; process compliance e.g. Mnotes data collection; due diligence validation e.g. distribution and retailer handling trials.
  • To develop close working relations with site-based technical support functions
  • Maintain and update the packaging specification system and confirm supplier approvals.
  • Ensure that all UK and International legal requirements relating to packaging are strictly adhered to, and that awareness of amendments and new requirements are maintained and communicated within relevant functions e.g. Packaging R&D, Central QA etc.
  • Collate & communicate relevant packaging weight data related to PRN, EPR, Plastics Tax, etc .
  • Prepare annual review of capital requirements for packaging R&D, ensuring alignment with future technology development platforms and business strategy, initiate & manage capital process through to commissioning of equipment.
  • Liaise closely with Packaging Development colleagues within Premier Foods and deliver monthly activity reports in support of this.
  • Manage and develop a positive approach to Packaging & Machine suppliers to attain new ideas and product improvement to support implementation process
  • Use effective project management skills and ensure clear communication both written and verbal.
  • Represent the company at exhibitions, seminars and industry functions


What we need from you:


  • Minimum five years in a packaging development role, preferably in Food/Beverage or Pharmaceutical environment
  • Complete development from concept to launch
  • Multi-disciplinary team working
  • Working with bodies such as WRAP, BPF, MPMA, etc
  • Operational experience an advantage
  • People management (technician level) an advantage.
  • Five years’ experience in packaging development and innovation with knowledge of a broad range of many materials e.g. Glass, Plastic, Films & Flexibles, Closure systems, Corrugated, Cartons, Metal cans
  • Degree (or equivalent) in a technical discipline, science, engineering, product design, packaging
  • Institute of Packaging Diploma would be an advantage
  • Project Management skills
